Avignon became home for Catholic popes for a long period following
conflicts and disputes about the papacy in Rome in the 13th century. The palace (above)
was built between 1335 and 1364 on a natural rocky outcrop at the northern
edge of Avignon overlooking the river Rhone. Here are some photos of the
palace and the area around it.
